Notes on event

At 03.25 hours on 20 Oct 1940 the Janus, a straggler from convoy HX-79, was hit amidships by one G7e torpedo from U-46 and broke in two in a big explosion. Both parts remained afloat for some time. The U-boat had unsuccessfully attacked the tanker with two torpedoes at 02.44 hours. The survivors were picked up by HMS Hibiscus (K 24) (LtCdr R. Phillips, RNR) and landed at Methil.
