Notes on event | Between 00.50 and 00.52 hours on 26 September 1940, U-137 fired three torpedoes at convoy OB-218 west of Malin Head, sank Manchester Brigade and damaged the Ashantian. The Manchester Brigade (Master Frederick L. Clough) was the ship of convoy commodore Vice-Admiral Humphrey Hugh Smith, DSO, RNR. The master, the commodore, five naval staff members, 50 crew members and one gunner were lost. Four crew members were picked up by the French hospital ship Canada and landed at Gibraltar. | ||
