Notes on event | At 21.20 hours on 4 Aug 1940 the unescorted Pindos (Master Dionisios Panas), a straggler from convoy SL-40 since 20 July, was hit by two torpedoes from U-58 and capsized to port side before sinking about 21 miles west-northwest of Tory Island. The U-boat misidentified her as British motor merchant Limerick (8724 GRT). The survivors abandoned ship in the lifeboats and made landfall with the help of a local fishing boat at Downings, Co. Donegal. They were lodged with local people for two days before moving on to Lononderry, where two injured men were treated for injuries at a hospital, including one man who had his nose blown off. | ||
