Notes on event

At 10.37 hours on 24 Sep 1939 the neutral Getrud Bratt (Master E.K. Jönsson) was stopped with two 20mm rounds across her bow by U-4 in the Skagerrak. The U-boat went alongside to check her papers and then ordered the crew to abandon ship within 15 minutes because she was carrying contraband. The Germans had no scuttling charges left and used a torpedo to sink the ship, but the first two G7a torpedoes missed. The third G7a torpedo hit and sank Gertrud Bratt 12 miles southeast of Jomfruland, Norway. According to the survivors the Germans had promised to tow the two lifeboats towards the nearby coast but apparently the U-boat left without helping them after sighting an aircraft. The boats were spotted later that day by the Norwegian customs cruiser T-II and towed to Langesund, Norway.
