Notes on event | After sinking the Fort Bellingham with a coup de grâce at 06.53 hours on 26 January 1944, U-957 spotted near the sinking position a field of debris with a torpedo net, an armed boat, a cutter and many rafts, tyres and cans. At 07.59 hours, they fired with the 20mm AA gun at the cutter and the boat that was also rammed. Two men from the Fort Bellingham were found aboard and taken prisoner. The armed boat was the USS PTC-38, which had been on transfer from the USA to North Russia on deck of the Andrew G. Curtin and floated free after the ship was sunk by U-716 (Dunkelberg) at 00.20 hours on 26 January. |
