Notes on event | At 04.52 hours on 23 January 1943, U-431 opened fire with the deck gun and the anti-aircraft gun at the first of a group of three sailing vessels off Rouad Island. After firing 10 rounds of 88mm and 48 rounds of 20mm the U-boat ceased the attack because the other schooners were too close to the coast and the Alexandria was burning and sinking. Survivors from this vessel made landfall at Tartous, Syria. |
