Notes on event | On 1 Sep 1944 the unescorted Troilus (Master Evan Williams) was torpedoed and sunk by U-859 about 300 miles northeast of Socotra Island. Four crew members and two passengers were lost. The master, 66 crew members, 12 gunners and 16 passengers were picked up by HMS Nadder (K 392) (T/A/LtCdr P.E. Kitto, RNR) and HMS Taff (K 637) (Cdr G.A.G. Ormsby, DSO, DSC, RN) after being sighted by a Dutch Catalina aircraft (321 Sqdn RAF) and landed at Aden on 10 September. | ||
