Notes on event

On 18 August 1944 the unescorted Nairung (Master John Murray) was torpedoed and sunk by U-862 from a distance of roughly 1000 meters northeast of Mozambique. The master, 82 crew members and eight gunners were lost. The ship blew up in such a violent explosion that some crewmen aboard the U-boat thought that they had been struck by their own torpedo, while debris struck the U-boat without damaging her. Timm inspected the location of the sinking, but no survivors were found. The engineers recovered some copper wire from wreckage.
