Notes on event

On 9 July 1944 the unescorted Shahzada (Master Allan Scott Hamilton) was torpedoed and sunk by U-196 about 470 miles west-southwest of Bombay. The master, 36 crew members and nine gunners were lost. 15 crew members were picked up by the British steam merchant Changon and landed at Bombay on 17 July and 21 crew members made landfall at Goa on 18 July. 15 other crew members and one gunner were picked up by the Swedish steam merchant Magna and landed at Aden on 21 July.
