Notes on event | At 01.17 hours on 26 April 1940 the unescorted and unarmed Lily (Master O.P. Sørensen) was struck on port side between the bridge and forward mast by one G7a torpedo from U-13 while steaming at 8 knots in a calm sea about 11 miles southeast of Sule Skerry, Orkney Islands. The explosion broke off the bow and caused the ship to sink within 45 seconds. The U-boat had hit the vessel with a first torpedo at 00.28 hours, but it did not detonate. The Lily was reported missing after leaving Kirkwall with a British prize crew (one officer and five ratings) aboard. | ||
