Notes on event | At 01.36 hours on 10 April 1940 the unescorted and neutral Sveaborg (Master K.-E. Thunberg) was hit in the bow by a torpedo from U-37 off Fair Isles and caught fire after being hit by a second torpedo at 02.15 hours. The U-boat had spotted the tanker at 21.35 hours the day before and reported that the vessel was armed and carried no national markings (apparently false observations). One G7a torpedo fired at 23.59 hours missed and two G7e torpedoes fired at 00.02 and 01.05 hours detonated prematurely. The Tosca spotted the burning tanker and tried to assist the survivors, but was herself sunk by the U-boat at 03.23 hours. Later that morning, the survivors from both ships were picked up by the British armed boarding vessel HMS Northern Chief and landed in Kirkwall on 11 April. | ||
