At 18.50 hours on 26 Sep 1943 the Itapagé (Master Antônio da Barra) was hit on the starboard side by two torpedoes from U-161 and sank within four minutes off Lagoa Azeda about 20 miles south of Maceió, Alagoas. 16 crew members and four passengers were lost. The master, 54 crew members and 32 passengers abandoned ship in lifeboats and made landfall at Jequiá beach, São Miguel dos Campos where they received first aid, food and clothes from the local population. Later they were transported to Maceió where 22 injured survivors were taken to a hospital. On 27 September, the crew member Domingos Silva Santos (who had survived the sinking of Arabutan) died of his wounds and was buried at Santa Casa´s cemetry the same day. Two days later, the machinist Antônio José dos Santos also died in the hospital.
