Notes on event | At 15.42 hours on 7 August 1943 the Contractor (Master Andrew Brims) in convoy GTX-5 was torpedoed and sunk by U-371 about 75 miles southwest of Sardinia. The master and four crew members were lost. 67 crew members and eleven gunners were picked up by HMS BYMS-2011 (J 811) (T/Lt L. Hutchinson, RNR), HMS BYMS-2014 (J 814) (T/Lt E.D.J. Cox, RNR), HMS BYMS-2024 (J 824) (T/Skr A.H.V. Winfield, RNR) and HMS BYMS-2209 (J 1009) (T/Lt P.P. Shorter, RNR) and landed at Malta, where two injured crew members later died of wounds. | ||
