History | Completed November 1942, with the hull built by Vancouver Dry Dock Co, for US War Shipping Administration (WSA), lend-leased on bareboat charter to British Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). | ||
Notes on event | At 04.50 hours on 6 August 1943 the unescorted Fort Halkett (Master William Walker, DSO) was torpedoed and sunk by gunfire by U-185 about 600 miles southeast of Natal, Brazil. The master and 23 survivors made landfall south of Natal. The chief officer and 23 survivors were picked up by USS Goldsborough (AVD 5) (Lt W.J. Meehan, USNR) south-southest of Recife in position 08°35S/34°40W on 13 August after their lifeboat had been spotted by aircraft and landed at Recife. The second officer and ten survivors landed at Cabadello, Brazil. | ||
