History Completed in December 1912 as German Sierra Nevada for Norddeutscher Lloyd, Bremen and in 1913 made her maiden voyage from Bremen to Buenos Aires via Lisbon, Rio de Janeiro and Montevideo. In 1917 the ship was interned at Recife, shortly thereafter seized by Brazil and renamed Bagé. She was operated on the route Santos to Hamburg until Brazil declared war on the Axis powers in August 1942 and then transported Italian and German diplomats to Lisbon to be exchanged with Brazilian diplomats. 
Notes on event

At 02.36 hours on 1 August 1943 the unescorted Bagé (Master Arthur Monteiro Guimarães) was hit on the port side by one torpedo from U-185 and was sunk by gunfire off the Rio Real Estuary, Sergipe, Brazil. The ship had been sailing with convoy TJ-2 until she was ordered out of convoy by the Brazilian cruiser Rio Grande do Sul because the ship was making too much smoke. The master 19 crew members and eight passengers were lost. 87 crew members and 19 passengers survived.
