History Laid down as Krasnyj Nikolaev, launched as Embaneft and completed in September 1929. 1934 transferred to Sovtanker and renamed Emba

On 29 January 1942 the Emba was bombed and heavily damaged by German aircraft off Kamysh-Burun in the Black Sea. The burned out engine room could not be repaired, so the tanker was used as storeship in some harbours, before she was towed to Suchumi in May 1943. The tanker had been mined and damaged while in tow on 14 Feb 1943.
Notes on event

At 18.46 hours on 30 July 1943, U-24 fired two torpedoes into the harbour of Sukhumi. Both torpedoes struck the Emba, which was moored at the quay off the Sukhumi Lighthouse as a stationary storeship and was completely destroyed.
