Notes on event | At 14.00 hours on 5 May 1943 the Dolius (Master Gilbert Robert Cheetham) in convoy ONS-5 was torpedoed and sunk by U-638 about 445 miles east-northeast of Belle Isle. Three crew members and one gunner were lost. The master, 57 crew members and eight gunners were picked up by HMS Sunflower (K 41) (LtCdr J. Plomer, RCNVR) and landed at St. John’s, Newfoundland. The U-boat had been sunk by the corvette after the attack. | ||
