Notes on event

At 04.41 hours on 2 April 1943 the unescorted Lysefjord (Master Arne Olsen) was hit on port side near #3 hatch by one of two torpedoes fired by U-155 about 55 miles west of Havana, Cuba. The U-boat had spotted the freighter about five hours earlier and approached for a submerged attack but could not fire a torpedo due to her zigzag course, so they surfaced and overtook the ship for a second approach on the surface after sunset. The torpedo struck underneath the funnel and its detonation was almost immediately followed by a boiler explosion, causing the ship to sink by the stern in less than five minutes. Four crew members were lost. The starboard lifeboat capsized when the ship sank throwing its occupants into the choppy sea. They were pulled under water by the suction, but eight of them including the master managed to get onto two rafts that had floated free and were then tied together. The port lifeboat had been launched by two crewmen and after rescuing nine other survivors from the water was ordered to head for the nearby coast to get help as no distress signal was sent. This boat in charge of the chief officer made landfall near Punta Gobernadora Lighthouse after having rowed for 14 hours. In the meantime, the eight men left behind on the rafts rightened the capsized boat and transferred to it. They were rescued in the morning of 3 April by the Honduran steam merchant Howard in position 23°12N/83°05W and were landed in Tampa the following afternoon.
