Notes on event | At 06.26 hours on 22 Jan 1943 the Neva (Master Gustaf B. Ahlström) in convoy UR-59 was hit by one torpedo from U-358 and sank vertically by the stern about 200 miles west of the Faroe Islands. The convoy had been scattered the day before when the ships had to hove to in a storm and Neva was about 2 miles behind the leading ship when torpedoed. Most survivors drowned in the ice cold water when a lifeboat capsized upon launch in rough seas. Only two men managed to rescue themselves on wreckage and a raft that floated free, were picked up at daylight by HMS Cape Portland (FY 246) (Lt K.F. Rasmussen, RNR) and landed at Reykjavik on 23 January. | ||
