| History | HMS Partridge (G 30) was completed in February 1942. In June 1942 HMS Partridge (G 30) (LtCdr W.A.F. Hawkins, DSO, OBE, RN) belonged to Force X, screening the Malta convoy WS-19Z during Operation Harpoon. On 15 June, they were attacked by the Italian light cruisers Eugenio di Savoia and Raimondo Montecuccoli and five destroyers south of Pantellaria. In this action, HMS Bedouin (F 67) (Cdr B.G. Scurfield, OBE, RN) was disabled by gunfire and HMS Partridge (G 30) took her in tow, despite of being herself damaged. When the Italians reappeared the tow was cast off and the disabled destroyer later finished off by a torpedo from an Italian aircraft, while the other destroyer escaped. | ||
| Notes on event | At 08.06 hours on 18 December 1942, HMS Partridge (G 30) (LtCdr W.A.F. Hawkins, DSO, OBE, RN) on anti-submarine sweep with the Force H was hit by one torpedo from U-565 and sank west of Oran, Algeria. Three officers and 35 ratings were lost. The commander, five officers and 167 ratings were picked up by HMS Penn (G 77) (LtCdr J.H. Swain, DSO, RN). | ||
