Notes on event

At 21.25 hours on 19 November 1942 the unescorted and unarmed Gunda (Master Odd Pedersen) was hit on starboard side forward of amidships by one G7a torpedo from U-181 and sank by the bow in two minutes about 20 miles northeast of Inhaca in the Mozambique Channel. The ship sank so fast that no lifeboats could be launched. The Germans tried to question some Asian survivors on rafts, but were not able to understand them. All European officers and 32 Asian crew members were lost. Eight Indian survivors later came ashore on two small rafts north of Ponta do Ouro.
