Notes on event

The neutral Silja (Master Knut Jensen) left Gibraltar on 5 February and was reported missing thereafter.

At 20.59 hours on 10 Feb 1940, U-37 fired one torpedo at an unescorted steamer about 75 miles west of Cape Clear, Ireland. The vessel broke in two after being hit aft. The stern part sank immediately and the fore part followed after a few minutes. This must have been the Silja.
