Notes on event

At 00.00 hours on 30 October 1942 the Brittany (Master William White Dovell) in convoy SL-125 was torpedoed and sunk by U-509 near Madeira. 12 crew members, one gunner and one passenger were lost. The master, 32 crew members, seven gunners and four passengers were picked up by the British auxiliary patrol vessel HMS Kelantan (F 166) (Lt A.E. Jones) and landed at Gourock on 8 November.
