History Completed in September 1901 as steam merchant El Dia for Morgan Line (Southern Pacific SS Co), New York. In November 1917 requisitioned by the US Navy and converted to the auxiliary minelayer USS Roanoke (ID # 1695) (Capt Clark D. Stearns). Commissioned in January 1918 and sent to Scotland as part of the Mine Squadron 1 of the Atlantic Fleet to work on the Northern Barrage in the North Sea. In early 1919 transferred to the Cruiser and Transport Force and made four voyages to bring troops home from France. In August 1919 returned to the owner by the US Shipping Board and renamed El Dia. 1941 renamed Pan York for Pan-Atlantic SS Corp (Waterman SS Co), Wilmington DE. 1943 sold to United Fruit Co, New Jersey.

Post-war:
In March 1947 sold to F. & B. Shipping Co, Miami FL. The ship was used by the Mossad LeAliyah Bet for the illegal immigration of Jewish refugees to Palestine and given the unregistered name Kibbutz Galuyot. 1949 renamed Kommiyut for Zim Palestine Navigation Co Ltd, Haifa. Broken up at Briton Ferry in November 1952. 
Notes on event

At 12.00 hours on 16 Sep 1942, U-165 attacked convoy SQ-36, sank the Joannis and damaged the Essex Lance and Pan York.

The damaged Pan York arrived at 18 September in Montreal, was repaired and returned to service.
