Notes on event | At 21.57 hours on 7 September 1942 U-617 fired a spread of two G7e torpedoes at the unescorted Tor II (Master Óli Fossaberg), which was hit on the port side by at least one of them and sank within a few minutes about 70 miles southeast of Vestmann Island. 18 crew members were lost. The master and two crewmen survived and were landed in Iceland. The U-boat had chased the ship since 12.25 hours, but almost lost contact when it had to stop for two hours to repair the starboard diesel engine. | ||
