Notes on event | At 02.54 hours on 27 Aug 1942, U-516 missed the unescorted Port Jackson (Master George Leonard Hazlewood) with a spread of four torpedoes about 480 miles west of Cape Clear and then opened fire with the deck gun. The U-boat fired 14 rounds but had then to break off the attack due to the accurate return fire from the ship. She had been hit by two rounds that started a small fire, but managed to escape at full speed (over 16 knots) into haze and arrived safely at Liverpool on 29 August. | ||
