Notes on event | At 09.13 hours on 16 Aug 1942 the neutral Annibal Benévolo (Master Henrique Jacques Mascarenhas da Siveira) was hit aft and in the engine room by two torpedoes from U-507 and sank almost immediately 15 miles off the mouth of the River Real. The survivors clung to debris and only the master and three crew members managed to reach the shore south of the Estancia Lighthouse. 67 crew members and 83 passengers were lost. The sinking of five Brazilian ships by U-507 with over 500 casualties within two days, led to the Brazilian declaration of war against Germany on 22 Aug 1942. |
