Notes on event

At 07.15 hours on 28 July 1942 the unescorted Barbacena (Master Aécio Teixeira da Cunha) was hit by two torpedoes from U-155 and sank within 20 minutes. Piening had first spotted the ship about 10 hours earlier and attacked the ship because she was armed with one 12cm gun. A first attack with a spread of two torpedoes had missed at 01.49 hours. The survivors abandoned ship in four lifeboats, they were picked up by the Argentinean steam tanker Tacito, Elmdale and San Fabian and one made landfall at Tobago Island.
