Notes on event

At 01.46 hours on 15 July 1942 the unescorted British Yeoman (Master Edward Paul Spencer Attewill) was hit by one torpedo from U-201 after being chased for about 14 hours southwest of the Canary Islands. The tanker immediately caught fire and the U-boat left the area to avoid the burning fuel on the water. When returning to the area the next morning, they found the stern still floating and sank her with 61 rounds from the deck gun at 10.00 hours on 16 July. The master, 35 crew members and seven gunners were lost. Ten crew members were picked up by the Spanish steam tanker Castillo Almenara and landed at St. Vincent, Cape Verde Islands.
