Notes on event | At 20.42 hours on 9 July 1942 the unescorted Triglav was hit forward and aft by two torpedoes from U-66 and sank quickly after a boiler explosion about 930 miles east-southeast of Bermuda. The crew abandoned ship in two lifeboats and the master was questioned by the Germans before the U-boat left the area. 19 survivors were picked up by the Spanish steam merchant Iciar and landed at Gibraltar on 28 July. The other boat containing 22 survivors was last seen steering southwest, but was never found. 23 crew members and one gunner were lost. | ||
