History | Completed in December 1898 as Atlas for Standard Oil Co of New Jersey, New York. Later sold to Italy and owned by Ditta G.M. Barbagelata, Genoa. In December 1941, seized by Mexico and renamed Las Choapas. | ||
Notes on event | At 15.25 hours on 27 June 1942 the unescorted Las Choapas (Master Pedro Calderón Lozano) was hit aft by one torpedo from U-129 and sank in flames north of Tecotutla, Vera Cruz. The survivors in three lifeboats were questioned by the Germans, but the U-boat then had to submerge and leave the area when a Catalina aircraft was spotted. | ||
