At 01.33 hours on 8 May 1942 the unescorted and unarmed Mildred Pauline (Master Abram George Thornhill) was shelled and sunk by U-136 with 102 rounds from the deck gun about 425 miles southeast of Nova Scotia. The vessel had been missed by a torpedo at 00.20 hours.
