Notes on event

At 09.35 hours on 6 May 1942 the unescorted Amazone (Master Johannes Pieter Giltay) was hit on the starboard side aft by one of two G7e torpedoes fired by U-333 about 16 miles east-southeast of Fort Pierce, Florida. The explosion broke off the stern and caused the ship to sink within two minutes, too quick for the crew to launch the lifeboats safely. The port boat overturned and nine men climbed onto it, while the starboard one swamped and nine survivors clung to its side. Two other men rescued themselves on a raft that had floated free. 13 crew members and one gunner were lost. The master, 17 crew members and two passengers were picked up a few hours later by USS PC-484 and landed at Miami.
