Notes on event

At 16.11 hours on 15 Dec 1939 the unescorted Germaine was stopped by a shot across her bow by U-48 southwest of Ireland. Because the ship was carrying cargo for Britain, the crew was ordered into the lifeboats and the ship was sunk by a torpedo at 17.40 hours. The survivors were picked up by the Norwegian motor merchant Vinland.
