Notes on event | At 16.44 hours on 13 Dec 1941, U-453 surfaced close to the neutral Badalona east of Gibraltar and ordered her to stop, but the tanker tried to escape and used the radio until a round from the deck gun was shot across her bow. After examining the papers the crew was ordered to abandon ship because they had violated the prize rules by ignoring the order to stop. One of the lifeboats swamped during the hasty launch, drowning three of the occupants. At 18.05 hours, the tanker was hit by a torpedo and settled by the stern but remained afloat. She broke in two and sank after being hit by a coup de grĂ¢ce at 18.20 hours. |
