Notes on event | At 11.40 hours on 21 Aug 1944, U-480 fired a Gnat at HMCS Alberni (K 103) (A/LtCdr I.H. Bell, RCNVR) on A/S patrol east of the swept channel to the Normandy beaches. The corvette was struck on the port side aft of the engine room and sank by the stern within 30 seconds about 25 miles southeast of St. Catherine´s Point, Isle of Wight. Four officers and 55 ratings were lost. The commander, two officers and 28 ratings were rescued by the British motor torpedo boats HMS MTB-469 and HMS MTB-470 and taken to Portsmouth where the two injured men were treated. | ||
