| Notes on event | Between 07.18 and 07.19 hours on 22 Sep 1942, U-435 fired five single torpedoes at convoy QP-14 west of Jan Mayen Island and reported five hits on three ships. The ships hit were Bellingham, Ocean Voice and Grey Ranger. The Ocean Voice (Master Harold James Kay) was the ship of convoy commodore John C.K. Dowding (CBE DSO RNR RD). The master, the commodore, 31 crew members, five naval staff members and 25 Soviet passengers were picked up by the HMS Seagull (N 85) (LtCdr C.H. Pollock) and landed at Scapa Flow. 16 crew members and ten gunners were picked up by the British rescue ship Zamalek (Master Owen Charles Morris DSO) and landed at Glasgow on 27 September. | ||
