Personal information
Son of Peter and Bridget Fanning; husband of Freda Fanning, of Hoboken, NJ. His son Joseph Michael Fanning served with him aboard Martin Van Buren and went back to his room to get his father’s case of Cognac when the ship was torpedoed. Both survived the attack.
Michael Joseph Fanning died of Pulmonary Tuberculosis in a hospital in Calcutta when he was employed as Chief Engineer aboard the Valiant Enterprise in 1959.
