Personal information
Claude Irvin Sumner joined the Merchant Marine in New York City during July 1941. After Cities Service Empire was torpedoed he threw a wooden plank into the water and floated on it until he was rescued about 4-5 hours later. He eventually became an engineer and Ensign in the USNR, being honorably discharged on 23 July 1945.
