Personal information
Patrick Mallon served in the Royal Navy from 26 June 1940 to 29 December 1945, mainly on destroyers of the K and J class as Able Seaman in the Torpedo Branch. He twice survived a sinking, one when HMS Welshman was sunk in February 1943, but the other is not yet known. Patrick spent a lot of time during the war in Alexandria and Malta and also met Lord Mountbatten when he was a captain or flotilla leader. He also served on a corvette but most of his service however was on the destroyers on convoy escort duty in the Mediterranean, the Atlantic and Arctic, although he was also involved in the Normandy landings in June 1944, saying they gave them pills to keep them awake for two days.
