Personal information
Lieutenant (Acting Captain) Thomas Richard Thomas of The South Wales Borderers had been wounded at the First Battle of El Alamein in early July 1942 and was being transported home aboard Duchess of Atholl to complete recover from his wounds. He was one of the men spoken to by the commander of the U-boat shortly after the sinking, and was later rescued by HMS Corinthian. Unfortunately he suffered a severe stroke and was unable to be interviewed for an oral testimony by the Imperial War Museum before he passed away in 1998.
