Claude Harry Thomas received his certificate of competency as master of a foreign-going steamship on 3 April 1941, though did not serve as captain until 1962 or 1963. He passed away on 19 December 1974, suffering an aortic embolism while sailing back to port, while his family was waiting to hear from him about where and when to pick him up so that he could spend Christmas with them.
