Personal information
George J. Weidner was rescued by Zamalek after the Christopher Newport was abandoned and taken to Archangel, Russia where he remained until repatriated to the US via the UK. He graduated from US Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) in 1943 as a third mate (and Ensign in the USNR) and served on various merchant ships throughout the war in all theaters of the conflict. He eventually earned his Master's Papers and in 1957 he enter the USCG where he remained until retiring in 1977 with the rank of Commander.
