Personal information
Thomas Shacklady was a Royal Marine bandsman aboard HMS Penelope and survived the ordeal having floated in the Mediterranean Sea for approximately 4 hours after being sunk. He was picked up by a dingy from a tank landing craft sent out from Naples to collect survivors, was transferred to an American patrol boat and transported to Ischia, a nearby resort town in Italy. From Ischia he was sent to Naples and then to Malta, where he was reunited with other surviving bandsmen from the cruiser. His memory was that four bandsmen were killed and ten survived the sinking. He also served aboard HMS Resolution, HMS Royal Oak, HMS Kent and Cleopatra, amongst others.
