Son of William P. and Ethel M. Riley, of Carrington, New South Wales.
Thomas William Riley was fourth engineer officer aboard the Australian steam merchant Mareeba, which had been sunk by the German raider Kormoran in the Bay of Bengal on 26 June 1941. He was taken prisoner, after 103 days transferred to the German supply ship Kulmerland and two weeks later to the Spreewald. He was lost when the blockade runner was sunk in error by U-333 on 31 January 1942, being last seen in a lifeboat on 2 February that went missing.
