Personal information
Albert Melville was able seaman aboard the Australian steam merchant Mareeba, which had been sunk by the German raider Kormoran in the Bay of Bengal on 26 June 1941. He was taken prisoner, after 103 days transferred to the German supply ship Kulmerland and two weeks later to the Spreewald. He survived when the blockade runner was sunk in error by U-333 on 31 January 1942, was rescued by U-105 and later taken to the PoW camp Marlag und Milag Nord after being landed at Lorient, France on 8 February.
