Personal information
T/Lieutenant James Cloudesley Holloway was an engineer and as passenger aboard Lochkatrine en route to work with Naval Intelligence in Washington, DC. He later told his family how he ended up in the water after the ship was torpedoed as one of the fellows lowering the davits on the lifeboat let his rope go and dumped all of the occupants in the water. James hung on to one person who wasn’t wearing a life jacket, but when hypothermia set in he couldn’t hold on to this poor fellow any longer and had to let him go. That haunted him for years. He huddled in the water with other survivors. As James was speaking to one of them this fellows eyes glazed over and he was dead. A shark had attacked him from the waist down. James was rescued by the Canadian corvette HMCS Agassiz.
