Personal information
Edward Coogan of the Gorbals survived the sinking of Eastmoor and continued to serve in the Merchant Navy aboard a number of ships, including Fidra, Empire Livingstone, Winha, Hague and Eddystone. He also served aboard the LSI(HQ) HMS Hilary, aircraft transport HMS Athene and the escort carrier HMS Arbiter as Naval Auxiliary Personnel based at the barracks of HMS Mersey.
Eventually Edward immigrated to Australia where he settled in Goulburn, New South Wales, married, had six sons, carried on as a bricklayer and passed away on 11 August 2009. He often told his children of his exploits around the world and the tough upbringing he had during the depression years. He is survived by one brother, Andy Coogan, a well-known Scot who served in the armed forces and was imprisoned by the Japanese for many years. Andy even wrote a book about his experiences as a prisoner of war.
