Personal information
John McConnell Nicol survived the sinking of Cape of Good Hope in the lifeboat in charge of the chief officer, which made landfall in the Dominican Republic. John was from Dewshill Cottages, Salsburgh, Shotts, Scotland. His brother James Steward Nicol (born 4 Jan 1921 in Bothwell, died 21 Oct 1998 in Shotts) also served in the Merchant Navy.
