Personal information
William Brown later told his family that the “young 2 stripe captain” advised him not to make for a lifeboat after HMS Gould had been torpedoed. Instead he was able to grab his Mae West life jacket and together with a few others clung to ropes of a doughnut-type life float until being picked up by HMS Affleck. Aboard he saw the only surviving German sailor from the U-boat that had sunk his ship.
